DESCRIPTION
The IMIL CYL2L cylinder is designed for both diving and airborne use. It uses a stainless steel 904L steel for its core, with a carbon fibre winding to provide the pressure rating. The reader may be familiar with SS904L as being the stainless steel used by Rolex for its Yachtmaster and Oceanmaster watches. SS904L does not corrode in salt water or chlorine: it is considerably more resistant to corrosion than SS316.
The key benefit of the IMIL CYL2L is that it is safe: it does not fragment when pierced, even if pierced by large bore rifle rounds when fully pressurised, and it does not suffer from galvanic corrosion.
The IMIL CYL2L’s use of SS904L is in contrast with aluminium alloys that are extremely vulnerable to galvanic corrosion when they are coupled to a carbon composite. In the presence of sea water and carbon, aluminium corrodes occurs rapidly because water provides the electrolyte, turning aluminium-cored, carbon-wrapped cylinders into a battery. The corrosion can cause sudden and catastrophic failure. SS904L does not suffer this problem at all because it has the same galvanic potential as the carbon.
Open Safety offer this technology for cylinders in size ranges from 1L to 10L, all 300 working pressure rated, 450 bar test pressure.
